Real reviewer, bought this for my new job. My expectations were pretty low given the price point.First impression- it looked better than I had anticipated. Real leather, not great quality leather but looked nice, could use conditioning which I won’t do.I searched hard for quality issues and found only 1, a dime size gummy area by one of the latches on the underside of the leather. I got most of it off and it’s hidden, so no worries.I was not overwhelmed by an odor. In fact, I had to put my nose next to it and all I smelled was leather. Very faint, not displeasing.I have a 14” length laptop which fits great into the padded section. I have a 16 inch wide soft protective case I was using for my laptop. My laptop IN the soft case fits in the bag. But not in the padded section. I will carry my laptop in the padded section of the bag and leave out my soft case. I just wanted to test this out.It is a slim profile bag which I wanted. I put my notebook, laptop (in the padded case?), and bulky laptop charger in the bag. There’s room for other things, but not a lot more room for bulky things. It serves my needs.I also did some color tests to see if the leather would discolor my white shirts. Here’s my verdict. First, I wiped everything down with a damp cloth. Then I rubbed both a dry and wet paper towel across every section. When I rubbed hard, there was brown on the paper towel. So I went to my old Clark’s Chukka boots and did the same test. My Chukkas also left a brown residue when rubbing firmly. Verdict: I think this is normal. That said, it is likely you could get some very light brown discoloration on a lighter shirt. I think this would happen with any leather bag like this especially at this price ($70 USD).When casually wiping a dry white paper towel lightly across the bag I really don’t pick up any discoloration. I want a leather messenger bag and I doubt the color issue would be better with a different bag.I did not find the bag oily at all.My primary concern is the quality of the leather on the bottom (if standing it up) of the bag. And no it doesn’t stand up on its own. Looks like it could flake? If it went through a lot of abuse. Also, the verdict is out on how well this bag will hold up.Final thoughts, $70 seems a bit much for this. But it’s exactly what I wanted, looks good, fits my stuff, and has no real issues out of the box. I will keep it and update if anything changes.PS the main content area of the bag including the laptop section does zip closed. However in a torrential downpour there is still an open corner that could get the laptop a tiny bit wet. I read about this problem with other bags. I’m not worried. Also, if I had to bet on anything crapping out I would say the zipper would be most likely. Personally, I don’t find the zipper that necessary unless you have a lot of tiny loose objects and are throwing this bag all over the place. So I’m ok if the zipper craps out. I do question whether this will stand the test of time, but I believe this will be an issue with all bags at this price point. Would recommend.
